Jacket

Spring 2018

The prompt for this project was to construct a jacket out of a maximum of two materials.  I chose to make mine out of  1200 feet of silicone tubing, injected with 24 ounces of pearlescent ink. The filled ink tubes were then woven into pieces conforming to the provided jacket pattern, and attached to each other using the smaller sized tubing.  My thesis was discussing the shelf life of fashion and the speed at which people embrace new trends and designers, and I wanted to express this idea through a material that could theoretically last forever, yet displayed signs of aging through the disintegration of the ink contained in the tubes. As it dries and becomes more powdered the jacket will visually age, while still maintaining its original form and function.  I also used the technique of weaving to create a fringe element that was built on top of the provided jacket pattern. This allows it to be expressive of a certain time period or cultural movement, further building on the analysis of physical and sentimental aging in the fashion industry.
